Merging agile and UCD processes
Time to market is a big deal this new 2.0 world that we are in. Kelly referred to all the stuff we deal with at work at the Big Ball of Mud (Code/APIs/Frameworks/Frontends) and we are trying to untangle the mess and looking for a flexible, adaptable, feedback driven processes. The trick in merging UCD (User Centered Design) processes and using Agile methods is managing the area where development and design meet. Agile is proven best practice in managing web development in this new world and it is great in theory but how to you implement and make it work? Very carefully as she puts it. UCD is an approach that supports the entire development process. Agile processes should be matched up with UCS processes. At a high level when you are doing Agile you will concentrate on Concept, Build, Test, Release and running along side this you need to stay focused on Observing, Contextual Inquiries, Assessment testing and usability design.
With Web 2.0 this is the first time in the industry that ideas are coming from the bottom up.
There are lots of different styles of Agile:
· RAD
· RUP
· XP
· Scrum
· Cowboy Coding
Scrum is probably the best because its good at combining Agile concepts and UCD concepts for internet development. Agile processes are probably best at around 3 week cycles and most importantly you should set clear milestones. These milestones need to drive the project lifecycle and all members, client and team alike, should agree to. Daily meeting is good and you need to establish a reporting cycle also.
